Speaker
Leonard J. Swidler is Professor of Catholic Thought and Interreligious Dialogue at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA where he has taught since 1966. He is the co-founder (in 1964, with Arlene Swidler) and Editor of the Journal of Ecumenical Studies (quarterly). He is also the Founder/President of the Dialogue Institute – Interreligious, Intercultural, International (1978–), and the Founder/President of the Association for the Rights of Catholics in the Church (1980–).

    Interfaith Thanksgiving Gathering

    Madison's fourth annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration is being
    sponsored by the Greater Madison Interreligious Association (GMIA) and
    Inroads Ministry and more than two dozen area churches and civic
    organizations, including Lakeview Lutheran which is hosting the event in its
    East Hall. This multicultural and interreligious event is free and open to
    the public. It will be held on Sunday, November 22 , from 2:30 - 5 :30 pm.
    Lakeview Lutheran Church, 4001 Mandrake Road, is located at the corner of
    Mandrake and Northport Drive in Madison, Wisconsin.

    Arrivals for this year's event begin at 2:30 pm with Celtic tunes and other
    folk music by Michael Doran. The program begins at 3 pm, and a potluck
    social follows. There will be free childcare from 2:30 - 5:30 pm in the
    church nursery.

    This year's keynote address, "Cross Cultural Perspectives on Thanksgiving,"
    will be presented by Joseph Elder, professor at the University of Wisconsin
    in Department of Sociology and the Department of Language and Cultures of
    Asia. Professor Elder is a member of the Madison Monthly Meeting of the
    Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

    This year's celebration also will include music, readings, dances, and
    meditative reflection by presenters from different cultural and faith
    traditions, including Tibetan Buddhist, Roman Catholic, Muslim, Baha'i,
    Wiccan, Protestant Christian, Sufi, and others..

    Those who attend this year's event are invited, to bring canned goods or a
    cash donation for the charity food drive to benefit Dane County food
    pantries. Attendees also are welcome to contribute appetizers, snacks, or
    desserts to the social that concludes the program.

    The celebration is free and open to the public.

    Multifaith Events and Displays for 12th Interfaith Awareness Week

    2009 Events and Activities for Madison Area
    December 6 - December 12, 2009

    This is the 12th annual Interfaith Awareness Week proclaimed by the Governor
    of Wisconsin, the Dane County Executive, Madison Mayor and Middleton Mayor.
    All events and activities are free and open to the public.

    Interfaith Awareness Week 12 continues to be a collaborative effort of
    people of different faiths. This year, Reverend Anne Wynne is coordinator
    and facilitator of the noon program at the capitol. Greater Madison
    Inter-religious Association, Dialogue International and Inroads Interfaith
    Ministry are sponsors.

    There are two kinds of events planned: multifaith events in a public
    location and open houses of worship. This has at least nine open houses and
    two public events. There will also be two public displays for viewing:

    "Good Neighbor - Interfaith Awareness" in the main display case at the
    Middleton Public Library Starting December 1, 2009 - all month

    "The World of Faith Traditions in Wisconsin" in the Capitol Rotunda Monday
    December 7 through Friday December 11, 2009 Over 20 DISPLAYS INCLUDE: UNITY,
    UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST, SUFI ORDER OF THE WEST, SIKH, ROMAN CATHOLIC,
    PRESBYTERIAN, PAGAN, ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN, METHODIST (UMC), ISLAM, HINDU, EPISCOPAL, ECKANKAR, BUDDHIST, BELOVED COMMUNITY, BAHA'I and several interfaith groups.
